Chroma Wellness Center offers a uniquely affirming and clinically grounded psychiatric program designed to support the mental health needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals through personalized medication management, trauma-informed care, and holistic therapeutic practices.
Chroma’s psychiatric services support LGBTQIA+ adults seeking thoughtful medication management as part of outpatient mental health care, including coordination with therapy, IOP, and PHP programs.
At the center of this care is Dr. Robert Davies, MD, Chroma’s Medical Director—a nationally respected psychiatrist whose decades of experience in LGBTQIA+ and gender-affirming mental health care shape Chroma’s medical philosophy and clinical excellence.
A Legacy Of LGBTQIA+ And Gender-Affirming Psychiatric Expertise
Dr. Davies has spent much of his career building and leading innovative mental health programs for queer and gender-diverse communities. His work includes co-founder and Medical Director for the CU Medicine LGBTQ Mental Health Clinic, and co-founder of the UCHealth Integrated Transgender Program, one of the country’s first fully integrated Transgender Programs—where clients could access endocrine care, primary care, gynecology, plastic surgery, and mental health services in a single coordinated visit.
“People would come and see everyone they needed to see in an afternoon… doctors talking in real time and coordinating their care,” he recalls, describing a system built for seamless, affirming support.
Building Integrated Gender-Affirming Programs
His leadership has extended globally as well. He and his colleagues were invited to India to advise the development of the country’s first integrated transgender program—work that exposed him to the vastly different cultural landscapes affecting trans health worldwide.
“It astounds me over and over that people just don’t get that there are specific needs,” he says, stressing the importance of specialized, informed care.
This long-term commitment to training clinicians, advancing queer-affirming mental health, and challenging systemic gaps in care informs his leadership at Chroma Wellness.
“For some, treatment is familiar and comfortable; for others, internalized stigma or past medical trauma can make diagnosis and medication overwhelming.”
“If you’ve never felt safe in treatment, you’re not going to have developed a lot of those skills… being in a safe environment is a first step.”

A Medical Approach Rooted In Respect, Education, And Client Partnership
Chroma’s psychiatric services are grounded in Dr. Davies’ philosophy that effective medication
management begins with understanding each client’s lived experience. “You have to meet the client where they are,” he explains. For some, treatment is familiar and comfortable; for others, internalized stigma or past medical trauma can make diagnosis and medication overwhelming.
“There has to be a lot of education around what it actually means,” he says.
Dr. Davies prioritizes collaboration over prescription. Clients’ preferences, histories, hesitations, and identities guide the pace and direction of treatment.
He emphasizes that trust must be built before any changes are made: “I’m not going to push anything until we develop a relationship… you have to have the client’s buy-in.”
Who Psychiatric Services at Chroma Are Designed For
Psychiatric care at Chroma may be a good fit for individuals exploring medication for the first time, returning to care after a negative experience, or looking to adjust existing prescriptions in a more affirming environment. Some clients work with psychiatry alongside weekly therapy, while others receive support as part of IOP or PHP programming.
This approach ensures that medication management feels safe, empowering, and aligned with each individual’s goals.
Why Psychological Safety Matters in Psychiatric Care
A Safe, Inclusive, And Community-Driven Medical Environment
Chroma Wellness Center was created to provide a level of psychological and emotional safety that many queer individuals have never experienced in treatment settings. Dr. Davies underscores this importance:
“If you’ve never felt safe in treatment, you’re not going to have developed a lot of those skills… Being in a safe environment is a first step.”
He sees Chroma as a place where people can finally breathe, connect, and grow—supported by a multidisciplinary team, inclusive programming, and a strong sense of belonging. “It really does feel like a community… it’s a safe place to heal,” he says.
