Substance Abuse Treatment in Denver for LGBTQIA+ Adults

Personalized Addiction Treatment for LGBTQIA+ Individuals in Denver, CO

Chroma Wellness Center offers substance abuse treatment for LGBTQIA+ adults in Denver, delivered within our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Substance use rarely shows up alone. It often arrives alongside trauma, anxiety, depression, or identity-related stress, which is exactly the kind of layered care we provide.

You will not be shamed, lectured, or asked to leave your queerness at the door to get well. Our team understands recovery as something built around your full life, not something done to you.

Substances and Patterns We Treat

Treatment at Chroma covers a wide range of substance use concerns.

Common areas of care:

  • Alcohol use disorder
  • Methamphetamine and stimulant use
  • Cocaine
  • Opioids, including fentanyl
  • Benzodiazepines and prescription misuse
  • Polysubstance use
  • Chemsex and sex-linked substance use
  • Substance use that started as a coping tool for trauma or mental health

Care is layered with mental health treatment when substance use is tied to anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other concerns.

“In my clinical tenure working with queer and trans clients, I’ve seen how substance use, especially around sex, can become a way to manage trauma, loneliness, or shame. That’s why our approach is never punitive, it’s relational.”

A Different Approach to Substance Use

Most addiction programs were not built for queer adults. We were.

What that means in practice:

  • LGBTQIA+ affirming clinicians, many with lived experience
  • Substance use is treated as a response to something, not a moral failure
  • Trauma and mental health are addressed alongside use, not after
  • Harm reduction is respected as a valid entry point into care
  • No 12-step requirement, though community support is available
  • Identity, recovery, and mental health held together in one plan

We believe care should adapt to you. Not the other way around.

Support for Chemsex and Sex-Linked Substance Use

For clients whose substance use is tied to sex and intimacy, our PHP and IOP programs include a weekly sex, intimacy, and healthy relationships group, alongside clinical support from Stephen Sbanotto, LPC, CSAT, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist with over 15 years of experience in addiction, trauma, and sexual compulsivity.
