Chosen Family Therapy
LGBTQIA+-Affirming Chosen Family Therapy in Denver
Chosen family therapy helps you heal alongside the people who matter most to you. It is offered to clients as part of our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), not as a separate service you enroll in on its own.
The people who support you most might be a partner, close friends, a mentor, or your family of origin. For many LGBTQIA+ people, that support is a mix of chosen and biological family. Whoever they are, those relationships can be part of your care here.
How Chosen Family Therapy Supports Your Treatment
Most of us care deeply about the people in our lives. Those same relationships can also be complex and layered. Working on them in treatment can be an extremely healing and supportive experience.
Chosen family therapy at Chroma Wellness makes room for the concerns many people arrive with, including:
- Estrangement or distance from people you wish you were closer to.
- Rebuilding trust after conflict, addiction, or a period of crisis.
- Communication that keeps breaking down, even with people who care about you.
- Helping loved ones understand your identity, your recovery, or what would be most supportive for you going forward.
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, remember that they’re common and healing is possible.
What To Expect In Chosen Family Therapy Sessions
Chosen family therapy sessions include you and the support people you choose, and are typically guided by your individual therapist.
These sessions are scheduled during program hours and coordinated if your treatment team feels it would be beneficial for your treatment.
Participation in family sessions is always based on your goals, clinical fit, and your consent. You decide who is involved.
Signs Family Therapy Could Support Your Healing
You might find chosen family therapy helpful if you want to:
- Have safer, clearer conversations with the people close to you.
- Rebuild or strengthen a support system you can lean on.
- Prepare your relationships for life after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is chosen family therapy?
Chosen family therapy is relationship-focused work that includes the people you consider your closest support, whether or not they are biological family. At Chroma Wellness, these sessions take place within your PHP or IOP treatment.
Who can I include in my family sessions?
You decide. It might be a partner, close friends, a mentor, or family of origin. The goal is to involve the people who genuinely support your healing.
Is chosen family therapy the same as traditional family therapy?
Yes, it draws on the same clinical foundations and welcomes biological family just as much. The difference is that it centers whoever you consider family, which for many LGBTQIA+ clients includes people beyond their family of origin.
Do I need to enroll separately or get a referral for chosen family therapy?
No. Chosen family therapy is included as part of our PHP and IOP programs, so there is no separate sign-up. Your treatment team will incorporate it into your treatment plan when it fits your goals.
Does insurance cover chosen family therapy at Chroma?
Because chosen family therapy is part of your PHP or IOP care, it is generally covered the same way as the rest of your treatment. Our admissions team can verify your benefits before you start, so you know what to expect.
