Autism Treatment in Denver for LGBTQIA+ Adults
LGBTQIA+ Treatment Built for Autistic Adults
Chroma Wellness Center supports autistic LGBTQIA+ adults seeking treatment in Denver through our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Most autistic adults come to us for mental health, trauma, or substance use concerns, looking for treatment that affirms how their brain actually works.
At Chroma Wellness, you do not have to mask, perform “neurotypical,” or earn your way into accommodations. Our team understands autism, and treatment is built around you.
Signs You Might Benefit From Autism-Affirming Treatment
Most autistic adults arrive for the things that built up around being autistic in a world that wasn’t designed for them.
Common reasons clients come in:
- Anxiety or depression that has not responded to traditional treatment,
- Autistic burnout from years of masking or overextending.
- Trauma from environments that demanded you perform “normal.”
- Sensory overwhelm that affects your ability to work, sleep, or connect.
- Substance use that started as coping.
- Identity-related stress at the intersection of queer and autistic experience.
You do not need a formal autism diagnosis to be here.
Autism Treatment That Works With You, Not Against You
Treatment at Chroma adapts to how you process, communicate, and regulate. Accommodations are built in, and the skills we work on are the ones you actually want.
What that looks like in practice:
- Predictable structure, clear schedules, and direct communication from staff
- Sensory-aware spaces, with quieter areas, breaks, and stim tools are welcome
- No forced eye contact, role plays, or social performance
- Self-regulation and sensory coping tools that fit your nervous system
- Recovery from autistic burnout, at your pace
- Executive function and communication strategies for daily life and relationships
- Unmasking support, if and when you want it
The goal is a life that fits you, not making you fit a life that doesn’t.

Clinical Care Within PHP and IOP
Accommodations and skills sit on top of structured clinical care.
Services available to autistic clients in programming:
- Neuropsychological evaluation for diagnostic clarity and treatment planning
- Psychiatric services and medication management under a board-certified psychiatrist
- Somatic and body-based therapies for nervous system regulation
- Group therapy facilitated with awareness of how autistic clients process
- Individual therapy that adapts to your communication style
- Integrated trauma and substance use care when those are part of the picture
These are part of structured programming, not standalone weekly sessions.
Why LGBTQIA+ Autistic Adults Choose Chroma
Most treatment was not built for autistic adults. Most LGBTQIA+ care was not either. We built for both.
- Affirming clinicians with lived experience and cultural competence
- A team that understands autism, trauma, and queer identity as overlapping
- No masking required, ever
- Accommodations built into programming, not bolted on
- Identity, neurotype, and mental health held together in one plan
We believe care should adapt to you. Not the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need a formal autism diagnosis to start treatment?
No. Many autistic adults are self-identified or in the process of seeking a diagnosis. Our team can also offer a neuropsychological evaluation as part of treatment if you want clinical clarity.
Will I be expected to make eye contact, role-play, or perform in groups?
Our groups are facilitated with autistic and neurodivergent processing in mind. You are welcome to participate in whatever way feels natural to you, including stimming, looking away, or stepping out when you need to. We adapt to how your brain works.
Can I bring stim tools, fidgets, or headphones?
Yes. These are welcome in programming and not treated as distractions. Sensory tools are part of how many of our clients regulate.
Will I be expected to sit still or perform "good behavior" in groups?
No. Our groups are facilitated with ADHD and neurodivergent processing in mind. Movement, fidgets, breaks, and different ways of engaging are normal and welcome.
What if I shut down or get overstimulated during a group?
You can step out and take a break whenever you need to. Chroma has quieter spaces available for clients who need to regulate, and our team is there to support you through it. Coming back when you are ready is part of how care works here.
Can autism, trauma, and substance use be treated together?
Yes. Most of our autistic clients are addressing more than one thing at once, and our PHP and IOP programs are designed to treat the whole picture rather than separate pieces.
What is the most successful treatment for autistic adults?
There is no single best approach. Effective care typically combines accurate assessment, accommodations that match how your brain works, support for co-occurring mental health and trauma, and clinicians who understand autistic experience. Chroma integrates all of these within structured PHP and IOP programming.
Is Colorado a good state for autistic adults?
Colorado has a strong network of autism-affirming providers and protections for neurodivergent adults. Denver in particular has a growing community of autistic LGBTQIA+ adults and the services to support them.
Do you take insurance?
We work with most major insurance plans. Our team handles the verification process and gives you a clear picture of your costs before you begin.
